Literary giant Chinua Achebe's body arrives Nigeria

       The body of Nigeria's late literary giant Chinua Achebe arrived in the capital city of Abuja early Tuesday, two days after its scheduled arrival date, for a series of activities that will culminate in his burial on Thursday.

The body of Achebe, who died in the US on 21 March, 2013, at the age of 82, was received at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport by government officials, including Governor Peter Obi of Achebe's native Anambra state, Secretary to the Government of the Federation Anyim Pius Anyim, writers, cultural troupes and family members.

The casket bearing his remains, draped in the country's green-white-green national flag, was later flown to Enugu, where a special Senate Session of the University of Nsukka (Enugu Campus) was being held in his honour.

The renowned author, best known for his first novel 'Things Fall Apart', taught at the University before leaving for the US.

On Wednesday, the body will be taken to Awka, capital of Anambra State, where other ceremonies, including cultural events and the reading of his books, are planned.
 

As at press time, Achebe’s body, accompanied by his wife, Christie and Governor Peter Obi had left for Enugu where activities have been lined up in his honour.
    Meanwhile, at 10am today in Abuja, ANA will hold a lecture at the International Conference Centre (ICC) for Achebe under the chairmanship of Niger State
governor Dr. Babangida Aliyu, while a day of tributes also holds today at the same venue at 3.30 pm
Last Sunday, prayers were held for the repose of Achebe's soul at the Ecumenical Centre in Abuja. The occasion also provided government officials and others the opportunity to eulogize the late award-winning writer.

   Achebe’s body will also be in Awka on Wednesday ,the funeral rites will be rounded off on Thursday in Achebe's home town of Ogidi, where a funeral service, expected to be attended by dignitaries including President Goodluck Jonathan, as well as interment will be held.
